If you want to erase or format a hard drive using a Mac, here are the quick instructions. The screenshot example is using an external hard drive I use for my Time Machine backups.
- First thing is to find the Disk Utility. I typically just type in a quick search in Spotlight at the top right of the screen.

- Now once Disk Utility is open, you need to select the drive that you want to erase or format and select the “Erase” tab at the top.

- Now select how well you would like your data erased or secured. I choose the 7 pass option as it is the DOD standard and makes me feel like my data is safe and sound and gone
